Task: Get wifi extenders to connect to the internet

Time taken: 40 minutes

This client had just upgraded to Spectrum internet and was having some trouble with his wifi extenders. The extenders worked perfectly on his previous internet, but when he tried to use them on his new Spectrum internet, they were basically just there for show.

He followed the manual and did everything correctly. My concern was that the extenders were bad (a possibility, but thankfully it wasn't the case) or that Spectrum, for some reason, didn't allow extenders (Just a thought I had)

Luckily, this was a very easy job to complete and was fun since it was my first time working with Wi-Fi extenders. Most of the time put into this job was waiting for devices to restart and boot up.

The wifi mesh system is the TP-Link Deco X55 AX3000 WiFi 6 Mesh System

Steps I took:

  • Power cycle

  • Extender reset

  • Switch connections

The first thing I did was power cycle the extender, which didn't change anything.

I then reset the main extender and waited for it to complete the cycle and power back on. Even after I reset it to factory settings, it still gave the same result: no internet.

The third step was the solution; I disconnected the Ethernet cable from the client's router and connected the extender directly into the Spectrum router. This solved the problem; now I'm not sure why the third-party router caused issues, but I assume it was most likely DHCP/routing issues.

After around 5 or so minutes for the extender to boot up and the LED indicator to turn blue, it was time to set up the network name and password. Once completed, I connected to the network and ran a speed test using speedtest.net.

After I confirmed it was in working condition, I moved a second extender to the office in the garage. Since this was a set, I only needed to plug this one in and wait for it to boot up.

And just like that, the job was complete. The third extender just stayed in the box since the other two covered everything.
